Scarborough Students Emerge Triumphant

O NLY a small points margin separated triumphant Scarborough Sixth Form equine team riders and a second-placed Kirkley Hall Equine unit team after a three-phase Northumberland College Inter College Equine Event.

The competition consisted of two dressage tests and two show-jumping rounds shared among team riders all on Kirkley Hall equine unit horses.

This was followed by an all-team member quiz covering basic horse care and physiology to training and competition, which went the way of Scarborough participants showing a superior dregree of riding experience, knowledge and adaptability.

Event organiser, Kirkley Equine Unit Sports Coordinator Dawn Convery, said: "The aim of the inter-college competition is to enhance young people's opportunities to participate in a wide range of sports such as equestrian, outdoor pursuits and not just main stream sports.

"Northumberland Colleges Kirkley Hall campus is the ideal location with an on-site Equine unit with two allweather outdoor arenas and high ropes course, based in a rural setting.

"Inter college competition is a vital part of the government five-hour offer and part of the college experience. For many young people this type of competition is the perfect outlet for the skills and knowledge they gain from PE, Equine or the various courses they do. It is also an opportunity to play and have fun with friends and achieve.

"The Inter College competition encourages colleges who may or may not have equine units to come together compete against each other in a safe and friendly environment giving our students experience for the future."

The three-hour trip for Scarborough students were led by Novice 20 dressage test winner 17-year-old Rowan Haywod, who showed what can be achieved in six years after taking up riding and show jumping and made a switch to eventing three years ago. …
