Log on to our website to see more pictures A LITTLE rain failed to stop a flood of entries and spectators at this year's Redcar Half Marathon.

The annual event held yesterday attracted scores of people to the sea front, with 1,700 people pulling on their trainers.

The 3km Redcar Family Fun Run was held on the Green Lane playing fields, and took place alongside the Start Fitness Redcar Half Marathon and the wheelchair race.

Many lined the streets to cheer on the runners, while families enjoyed entertainment set up at the event.

This year's event was a record breaker with Kenyan Kiplimo Kimutai, becoming the fastest to cross the finishing line in the event's 28-year history at 62 minutes.

The winner of the women's race was Jennie Blizard who finished the course in one hour and 18 seconds.

Cash prizes totaling pounds 6,000 were presented to the winners by Great Britain's leading race walker and local sports celebrity, Joanne Jackson, and Great Britain's middle distance star and New Marske Harrier, Ricky Stevenson.

The winning male in the wheelchair race was Simon Lawson who completed the course in 55 minutes. Winner in the ladies wheelchair race was Nikki Emerson who crossed the finishing line in one hour and four minutes.

Families also joined in the fun including the Gazette's advertising director Alan Dickinson who raced his 24-year-old policeman son Lee.

Victorious Alan, who crossed the line in a personal best of one hour and 52 minutes, said: "It was an excellent occasion and very well organised.

"Lee and his friends raised a great amount for charity as well."

Among the spectators was Great Britain international endurance runner Sharon Gayter.

Unfortunately the ultra runner was unable to take part due to problems in her left leg, and was wearing a support boot. …
