SOUTH African-born hotel magnate Sol Kerzner is among the distinguished Commonwealth subjects who have been knighted in the Queen's birthday honours. Kerzner, or Sir Sol as he will be called (will he be the first ever Sir Sol?), rose from humble origins in Johannesburg to become one of the most successful hoteliers in the world, and his career is one of the great rags to riches stories of post-apartheid South Africa.

The youngest of four children of a Jewish Lithuanian family, he literally fought his way out of poverty in Johannesburg as a college boxing champion. He went on to acquire an equally ball-breaking business reputation.

His five-star hotel, Sun City, with its Gary Player-designed golf course was credited with launching South Africa as a tourist destination. Within a few years he had established an international hotel chain, and his One & Only Hotel empire now stretches all over the world from Cape Town to the Maldives and Morocco. And his group is the largest employer in the Bahamas. …
