NORTH East anglers have maintained their leading national position at the annual water industry fly fishing competition. Northumbrian Water, who were second for the third time in four years, have been the consistent performers out of all the teams entered in recent years. In addition to the second places, Northumbrian Water, since 2005, has also been third twice and fourth once.

Peter Pattinson was 11th individual and a section winner, Andrew Scott was 13th and Brian Lillie also won his section to finish 20th.

Northumbrian Water's seven-man team were among 16 teams to fish the 31st Water Industry Game Fishing Championships (WIGFiC) hosted by Anglian Water at Pitsford Reservoir, Northamptonshire. Team captain Alistair Baker said: "This was a tremendous team effort for the sixth year running and maintains our position as the top water company."

Derwent Reservoir hosted the 2010 MacMillan cancer support charity competition on Sunday, raising more than pounds 1,500. The winners were Alan Bramfit's team from Esh Winning with 34 fish on the fly at Millshields.

During a good week's fishing, Mr Hamilton weighed in a bag of more than 24lb, including one fish at 6lb. Tommy Stephenson from Rowlands Gill took an eight-fish limit and safely returned 12 fish.

Anglers at Fontburn have enjoyed some good quality consistent sport with fine catches recorded by fly and bait rods.

R Athey, fishing ledgered Orange Powerbait eggs from the north shore next to the dam wall and jetty, caught his limit on two permits. His four rainbows and 12 blues weighed in at 32lb.

John Brennand also had a good day's sport on the fly recording an eight-fish limit of five rainbows and three blues while Colin Garbutt was well rewarded with three rainbows and five blues for 17lb 12oz and Mr Allaker took the heaviest fish of a week, a fine 4lb 8oz rainbow, along with seven more for a total of 18lb 4oz.

Shane Jackson had a great day with a Devastator and Hot Tail Dawson's Olive at Grassholme, taking his limit and returning a further nine while Lorrie Everitt safely returned six, also on fly.

At Hury, C Hartley had a nice 4lb 8oz rainbow in his catch of six fish while the best fish of the week, a well conditioned rainbow of 5lb 8oz, fell to K Holmes who recorded a limit bag. …
