Pounds 5M FOR STATIONS; Major Work Planned in Area

MAJOR improvements are planned for Redcar Central railway station.

Cash could also be spent on improving the railway station at Saltburn.

As part of the first phase of the Tees Valley Metro project pounds 5m is now being earmarked for the work at Redcar Central and Saltburn railway stations.

Originally the first phase included plans for a new station to serve the Wilton site.

But that idea has now been shelved and the cash has been switched to improving the two existing stations at Redcar and Saltburn.

The bulk of the cash will go on improving the Redcar station.

Redcar and Cleveland Council's Cabinet has approved the change in the plans.

Councillor Mary Lanigan, the Cabinet member for highways, transportation, and planning, said she remained hopeful that the money for the work would escape the Government's spending cuts.

She said the work would improve facilities for passengers and it was hoped the work would start early in 2011. …
