THE five Labour Party leadership candidates made their pitch to Teessiders in a Middlesbrough meeting.

The hustings debate, featuring Ed and David Miliband, Ed Balls, Andy Burnham and Diane Abbott, took place at the Town Hall Crypt on Saturday.

About 200 party supporters attended the event to quiz the five potential leaders on how they would advance the Labour Party. Among grassroots activists were a number of Teesside councillors and MPs Sir Stuart Bell, Tom Blenkinsop, Iain Wright and former Stockton South MP Dari Taylor.

Ed Balls, the former Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, spoke first saying the party had "lost our way" and needed to reconnect with the electorate.

Next was Ed Miliband, former Energy and Climate Change Secretary, who said: "We have made a huge difference to many, many people's lives and we should never forget that. Where we went wrong is where we became managers of the system."

Former Health Secretary Andy Burnham repeatedly spoke against the "London-centric" nature of Government and promised to give power back to local branches. …
