Popular Ponte Vedra Beach Library Faces a Parking Crunch; with Programs and a Tight Economy, Usage of the Branch Has Been on the Rise

PONTE VEDRA BEACH - Cars filled every parking space and lined the curbs Monday at the Ponte Vedra Beach branch library, a familiar sight during special events and through the summer, officials said.

It's an indication that the library and its program offerings such as summer reading have become more popular during tough economic times, said Karen Pan, St. Johns County spokeswoman.

"The demand and usage have been increasing," she said. "The library has received a 12-percent increase in circulation in the past few years; the programs have increased by 166 percent since 2007."

On average, the library gets roughly 16,000 visits per month, Pan said. The branch has 104 parking spaces.

Because this is a short week due to a county-wide budget-cutting furlough day, attendance could be up slightly, Pan said. A community group also was meeting Monday at the library.

Limited parking is not uncommon during events such as the impromptu book sale that took place on the sidewalk outside the library Monday, said Anne Crawford, assistant branch manager and youth services librarian. …
