Sheffield Tigers ............................. 43 Newcastle Diamonds...................... 47 NEWCASTLE Diamonds moved into third place in the Premier League after mastering the Tigers and their notoriously difficult Owlerton track last night, writes LAWRENCE HEPPELL.

The Tynesiders opened their account with a promising first lap in heat one with Kenni Larsen jetting ahead to win by a mile, but second-placed Derek Sneddon was passed by both Tigers before falling at the start of the second lap.

The equilibrium was maintained in heat two with a stunning win from Dakota North. Better was to come despite former Diamond Josef Franc taking the early lead in heat three as both Rene Bach and Jason King passed him, but none-the-less Newcastle took a surprise lead 8-10.

Larsen took heat five, straddled by Lemon wins, with a Bach win in the seventh keeping them four up, and at the mid-point not one Sheffield rider had won a race, a statistic not seen for several decades.

Hugh Skidmore became the Tiger to break the trend, winning a battle with North to pull the home side closer, but Lemon won heat nine. Ricky Ashworth took the tenth to level the match at 30-30, but Larsen's third win off the belt, coupled with another defeat of Cooper by North, put Newcastle back in front.

North rode the race of his life in heat 12 to win well over Franc as King sneaked a point again in a 2-4, while Lemon and Larsen nabbed another 2-4 in the 13th race to extend their lead to 36-42. A heat 14 4-2 left the match on a knife edge at 40-44 with one race left, which, for Lemon was a formality as he took an excellent fifth win out of five. SHEFFIELD TIGERS: Ricky Ashworth 5, Hugh Skidmore 7+1, Josef Franc 4+2, Richard Hall 10+1, Josh Auty 10, Paul Cooper 4+1, Simon Lambert 3+2. NEWCASTLE DIAMONDS: Kenni Larsen 10, Derek Sneddon 0, Jason King (Captain) 2, Rene Bach 10, Mark Lemon 15, Dakota North 10, Anders Andersen 0. …
