Megane Goes Topless

Article excerpt

AFREE-revving little engine is going to serve up some summer fun in one of two cabriolets Renault is about to release.

The convertible version of the Renault Megane goes on sale this month with a typical flourish of French fancy.

Not only has the Megane coupe-cabriolet got a cheeky rear end it's also got a see through top - whatever the weather.

As with the previous generation Megane convertible, the foldaway roof is made from glass and takes just 20 seconds to retract into the boot when the conditions are right for open air motoring.

The coupe-cabriolet is the last of six body shapes Renault has introduced on the latest Megane and the car is arriving at the same time as the smaller, all-new Renault Wind will make its debut.

Priced from pounds 21,595 the Megane coupe-cabriolet comes with plenty of kit including a TomTom navigation system.

The range tops out at pounds 25,830 for the quick GT version but it is the cheapest model with Renault's brilliant 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine which ticks all the boxes.

Reinforcements in the body mean that roof up or down the car feels well planted and uprated suspension makes for excellent handling.

Drive it enthusiastically on a sunny day and the Megane coupe-cabriolet is a joy. With the roof down there is just the right amount of bluster about the cockpit for a real open-top experience.

A glass wind deflector is fitted on the rear bulk head but is useful only up to about 50mph. For higher speeds Renault is providing a removable mesh screen which sits above the rear seats, turning the car into a two-seater. Roof up and the car looks better than its predecessor, although perhaps not as sleek or refined inside, and out as its great French rival, the Peugeot 308 CC. …
