ALAN SHEARER has identified Wayne Routledge as the key man in Andy Carroll's quest to make his No 9 dream a success.

The former England and Toon captain, having netted 206 goals as the club's all-time top scorer, is perhaps the best man for Carroll to turn to for advice Speaking for the first time about Carroll becoming United's No 9, Shearer - who wore the shirt for 10 years between 1996 and 2006 - knows that service to the big hit man will be key.

Shearer told the Chronicle: "I'm pleased for him.

"There are a few people who would have shied away from it over the years.

"He's shown some courage to take it - he's a Geordie lad and he's got to enjoy it.

"Andy's big and strong and tough to play against, and if they can get balls into the box he will be a handful in the air.

"I used Andy a few times and he did very well for me.

"He scored a good header at Stoke.

"I hope he can do it in the Premier League, and that could depend on who they get in. …
