Rare Cello Missing from Athens Shop; the $10,000 Instrument Has Solid Gold Tuning Pegs and Dates to the 19th Century

ATHENS - Dan Schab traveled thousands of miles over the decades with his cello, performing around the world, but a couple of weeks ago a thief snatched the antique instrument from his shop on Prince Avenue.

The $10,000 cello, which Schab says was made in Germany in the early 19th century and had solid gold fine-tuning pegs, disappeared from Dan Schab Violins while he was out of town.

Schab was gone for about a week, and he didn't notice anything missing from his shop when he returned last Wednesday - though he sensed something "seemed odd" in a room where he stored the antique cello along with other instruments, he said.

"I didn't realize it was gone until yesterday," Schab said Tuesday. "The problem was, I just didn't notice because I have a lot of instruments in that room.

"It was like having your leg cut out from under you."

Schab's not mourning for the instrument's monetary value, but for its sentimental worth. …
