CROWD favourite James Grieves heads to Stoke tonight with renewed confidence and in hope that he's turned his wretched season around.

After fitness problems, a series of injuries and costly engine blow-ups he admitted he was thinking of quitting before Bears promoter Brian Havelock snapped him up following his release by Glasgow.

And he revealed have been ready to pack in this week if he'd scored poorly in the home match against the Potters on Thursday.

But in the event he roared to his best score since (12+1) returning to the Simpson Racing UK/RIS Bears from Glasgow in mid-June.

Grieves had blown yet another motor in the previous week's win over King's Lynn, and the financial effect of his mechanical woes this year meant he was forced to use an engine he'd discarded earlier in the year.

"My head's been down a bit," admitted the former Bear of the Year.

"I blew another engine last week, so (Bears skipper) Gary Havelock offered to lend me one and so did both Josh Grajczonek and Mitchell Davey at Glasgow.

"But at the end of the day I can't even afford to get the engine I blew up last week done up because I've had so many blow-ups and I've smashed three bikes up this year.

"The start of the season until now really has been incident after incident, but I've got to take the good with the bad and I had two brilliant years at Redcar and a superb year at Glasgow last year.

"As my partner said to me - I have to ride through it. It will come good because I know I can do it.

"For Thursday's meeting I stuck a spare engine in that I'd had done up at the start of the season.

"I used it then and didn't like it but I thought I'd try it at Redcar and I don't think I missed a start all night.

"Another reason I've not been 100% is that I've had a problem with kidney stones so I haven't been training. …
