A DEAL to bring shipbreaking work to Tyneside has fallen through.

We told how North Tyneside Council was in negotiations over a contract that would see an ex-military vessel dismantled at the former Swan Hunter shipyard, in Wallsend.

That attracted controversy, with critics saying it went against plans to attract green industries to the North bank of the Tyne. But now the Chronicle understands the environmental services company in talks with the local authority has Tuesday, July 20, 2010 45p withdrawn its offer and taken the work to Turkey instead.
