MACKIE Burns is 61 but he still throws a mean punch and dances around a boxing ring like a butterfly.

Mackie fought amateur and professional bouts in Queensland and New South Wales under the name Freddie Burns.

A Butchulla man, his mum was Joan Ross, and known as Bunda, while his dad was Leonard Burns, who had some West Indian bloodlines.

Mackie grew up here in Irene and Frank Clarke's home in the Bay and one of the girls in that family was Frances, who is also featured on this page.

"I used to go to gyms in Brisbane and watch the fights and the training. I was four or five and was punching the bags. I fought my first fight at age five and was TKOd in the first round so I then decided I would stay healthier if I waited to grow up a bit. I did Co for about six years."

Mackie trains kids at the Hervey Bay PCYC Monday through to Thursday evenings from 5pm and Sergeant Pat Fleming, who's the branch manager there says, "The community doesn't know how lucky it is to have Mackie working here voluntarily. …
