HERVEY Bay business leaders pushed aside the doom and gloom of a business survey yesterday, saying wise investments and some careful fine tuning could open the doors to a brighter financial future.

Property developer and real estate principal Glen Winney said the region needed leaders to set and chase economic goals while restaurant investor Ernie Paussa identified property bargains.

Now was a terrific time to invest, with the upturn coming, he predicted.

Hervey Bay Chamber of Commerce president Bernard Whebell said the flipside to the USQ Fraser Coast Business Barometer survey showing that many businesses were doing it tough was that other businesses were still achieving during this economic slowdown.

But he said instead of making money, business owners were having to work harder to earn it.

"There's a culture of negativity that's developing that needs to be overcome. There are a lot of opportunities to be had."

Gerard O'Connell, Fraser Coast councillor with the economic development portfolio, said it was tough doing business anywhere and traders were not out of the woods yet. …
