Council Secrecy Causes Backlash

Article excerpt

OUR story detailing a possible CMC inquiry into the leaking of information from the Fraser Coast Regional Council has prompted an avalanche of comments on the Chronicle's website, frasercoastchronicle.com.au.

As some of the comments pressed the boundaries of defamation, it forced this paper to suspend the comments on the website.

In saying that, we welcome all input on the issue and all fair comments in the form of SMS messages or letters will be published.

Here were some of the comments we received online:

How many times does it have to be said "this council has got to go" and everyone should vote accordingly at the next election.

Well looks like ratepayers just pay their rates and the so called duly elected of the people are just puppets to perform to communist type demands of the Government and ratepayers are not to be informed of what is going on about town.

Based on memory, just about all our councillors stood on a platform of "open and transparent"; sadly they have failed to deliver. In my view the only items to be covered by the confidentiality clause should be those where there is the potential for financial loss or gain. As it is the ratepayers who pick up the tab and pay councillors' wages, we have a right to know.

Anyone who works for council is a public servant. I think that they need to get back to this basic definition of why they are there Co to serve the public of Fraser Coast. The money that is spent in often wasteful ways is public money, not just some bottomless pit.

So we have public servants spending public money Co this warrants total transparency. Seems like they take anything behind closed doors that may cause ratepayers to say, "Hang on a minute, we don't want that!"

Congratulations Cr MucKan Co as the weak fall at the feet of Mayor Mick, you alone have stood tall and called it as it is. …
