A BILLION-DOLLAR contract that could change the future of the Fraser Coast's manufacturing industry will be put out for tender by the end of the year.

For years the State Government has been dreaming big about the Redcliffe Rail Link on the outskirts of Brisbane but the stakes were upped this week when Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott both pledged more than $700m for the project.

Work on the link will start in two years and Wide Bay MP Warren Truss said that if Downer EDi won a slice of the pie, Maryborough workers would be set for decades to come.

In the past Downer EDi has lost contracts to overseas companies and Mr Truss said he hoped those days were over.

"This link will result in the biggest rail contract in history," Mr Truss said.

"It would be absolutely devastating if the contract were to go to a company in China."

Apart from the employment opportunities the link would present to locals once it came time for the addition of new locomotives, Mr Truss said winning the contract would do wonders for the EDi brand. …
