GRANDCHESTER is the site of one of the first koala nature refuges declared by the State Government.

Acting Climate Change and Sustainability Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk has signed a conservation agreement for the 9.9-hectare Bowman Park Koala Nature Refuge, west of Ipswich.

Landholder Justin Bowman has dedicated almost half of his 22-hectare cattle stud property to the refuge.

Ms Palaszczuk said koala nature refuges were a vital part of the Government's Koala Response Strategy.

C[pounds sterling]Run in parallel with our program to acquire properties in south-east Queensland, our refuge program offers financial incentives to private landholders to rehabilitate and maintain the properties as safe koala habitat,C[yen] Ms Palaszczuk said.

Mr Bowman, who has owned the property for less than a year, said the area was identified in koala mapping.
