MR A McAlpine recorded a 14lb 3oz pike, together with a more regular catch of roach, from Whittle Dene.

It was the first authenticated catch of this species from the Northumbrian Water Reservoirs. P Stanley had a busy day at the same complex, landing 216 gudgeon and roach, while on the Big Waters at Seaton Burn cracking perch to 2lb and bream were landed.

Angling feat of the week was performed by 21-year-old Richard Lansbury.

Fly fishing on Bowes, he claimed a superb 24lb 6oz common carp after an 18-minute fight.

At The Angel, both Lookout and Bassetts have been producing cracking silver fish catches, and on Bowes David Collins from Sunderland used chopped worm and caster to land large bream of 10lb 1oz, 9lb 3oz and 9lb 6oz as well as numerous carp averaging 5lb.

The first junior match at Hexham's Wydon Water as part of National Fishing Month was a great success - even though the fish themselves failed to co-operate on the day.

All the juniors received a certificate and goody bags to commemorate taking part, and the top four competitors received tackle vouchers from Hexham's Top Tackle tackle shop.

Jack Charlton with just under 2lb was the winner ahead of Matthew Stokes, Daniel Giles and Andrew Telfer.

This Thursday and next, Blyth Freshwater AC invite juniors between eight and 18 to an introduction to coarse fishing, learning fishing techniques using whips and rods.

Lots of angling students have been on Bassets this week as part of National Fishing Month with everyone catching good numbers of fish.
