Fraizer Is Thinking Club Not Country

FRAIZER Campbell is refusing to get carried away with thoughts of an England callup - because he is more concerned with nailing down a place at Sunderland first.

The 22-year-old has worn the Three Lions at every level but the highest, and manager Steve Bruce recently tipped the Manchester United academy product to complete the set.

His comments were in part prompted by Campbell's scintillating pre-season form, scoring six goals for the Black Cats with one game to go in Hoffenheim on Sunday. However, with an established strike partnership of Kenwyne Jones and Darren Bent to break before he can regularly play club football in his preferred centreforward position, the pacy Campbell is more concerned with that than talk of him being part of England's refreshed squad.

Campbell said of Bruce's comments: "It is always nice to hear your manager saying positive things about you.

"I am aware of what he said about England, and it is nice to hear that kind of thing being talked about.

"Hopefully, it can happen, but I am not getting carried away."

Capello is set to announce his squad for Wednesday's friendly at home to Hungary tomorrow night. In the wake of a hugely disappointing World Cup campaign the Italian is expected to supplement his under-performing squad with promising youngsters.

After a slow start to his Sunderland career which saw Campbell find the net just once for them in 2009, the Huddersfield-born front man found his form in the second half of the campaign.

Two FA Cup goals against Barrow lifted his confidence and by the end of the campaign he was starting to look like the player manager Steve Bruce paid pounds 3.5m to bring from Old Trafford.

Campbell scored four goals in his last 11 appearances of the season, form he has carried over into this summer's warm-up matches. …
