Thiess Workers at Collinsville Go on Strike in Hunt for Job Security

ABOUT 200 Thiess workers in Collinsville have been on strike for a week and are likely to remain off the job until at least Friday.

CFMEU mining and energy division district vice-president Steve Pierce said the mine workers took legally protected industrial action on Tuesday, July 27, after a long-running dispute with Thiess.

Mr Pierce said the two parties had been in EA negotiations for more than two years.

"The significant issue is security of employment and they haven't been able to get support from Thiess," he said.

Mr Pierce said workers were also upset that their employer was willing to pay good money to recruit workers from out of town but couldn't offer existing employees job security.

He said media reports that Thiess had been negotiating with the CFMEU were inaccurate.

"We've had no approaches from Thiess to solve the issues with us," he said.

Mr Pierce said Thiess had further inflamed the situation by using non-union staff from Collinsville and its other operations to load coal trains to keep the Collinsville operation going. …
