Harry Takes Step Up to Big League

RUGBY LEAGUE: Young Moranbah player Harry Pondekas moved a step closer to his dream of playing in the NRL when he was selected in the Australian under-15 merit team following the national carnival in Canberra.

Pondekas, 15, played front row and lock for the Queensland Maroons during the carnival, when he dominated the other forwards with good foot work, penetrating runs and jarring, solid defence.

Coach Don Saunders said Pondekas gave the forward pack strength.

"Harry's contribution to the team was outstanding," Saunders said.

"He is a strong lad, with size, speed and good footwork. He was a real handful for the opposition's defence. He was easily the pick of all the forwards there, showing his versatility and maturity. He has a bright future."

Pondekas grew up in Moranbah and played all his junior football there.

"The community and local businesses have really rallied behind Harry and a big thanks to them," his father Chris said. …
