BLYTH Spartans' combative midfielder Chris McCabe will not play this season after complications set in during his recovery from a badly broken leg.

The experienced McCabe, who has played almost 200 games for the Spartans, had considered quitting the game but was talked out of it by manager Mick Tait.

Tait said: "Chris is naturally very disappointed but I told him that at 29 he was too young to give up playing and suggested he takes a year out.

"Hopefully that will see him make a full recovery. He has been a key player at Blyth for the last five years and has a good goalscoring record from midfield."

While Tait bemoaned the loss of another proven campaigner, he announced his delight at the capture of Irish central defender Wayne Buchanan and youngster Dan Groves.

"I am pleased to get both players on board. Buchanan has a wealth of experience and will get stronger game by game as he hardly played last season.

"Groves is a young midfielder who was previously at Darlington, and I also expect to clinch the signing of teenage winger Liam O'Mahoney, who was at Sunderland last season. …
