SECOND-time racer Mitch Upton upset the field at the Central Queensland Personal Watercraft Club Jet Ski race day at Awoonga Dam at the weekend, when he powered to his first-ever win.

Conditions were ominous early on Sunday and heat times reflected the choppy weather. Track times varied from 1:48:63 to 2:27:88.

As the water smoothed, the times dropped in rapid succession to see Steven Taylor post a blistering 1:33:54 on his Yamaha FZR for three laps of the 400-500m (per lap) course.

Taylor's time left the following four competitors falling at least seven seconds shy of his mark before Upton and his Seadoo RXT-X 255 bested Taylor by close to two seconds with his 1:31:81.

First-time racer Josh Brown also kept his nose in the running with a 1:37:53 result from the heat.

Round five saw Taylor go .02 of a second faster than Upton, but Upton went one better to narrowly miss going under the 1:30:00 mark.

Upton and Taylor moved to the five-lap final alongside Josh Brown, Hayden Brown and Chris Jones, and, electing to race first, Upton competed the first three laps in 1:28:00 on his way to recording a time of 2:27:94 for the entire course. …
