Boris Bike Docks Hit a Glitch as Record Numbers Saddle Up

BORIS JOHNSON's cycle hire scheme suffered its biggest problem so far when docking stations across the capital failed.

Less than a week after the scheme was launched, the help line was inundated with calls from angry cyclists who found they were unable to rent or return bikes last night.

Call centre staff were telling callers "the whole system is down" as engineers worked to fix the glitches. Transport for London today insisted call centre staff had got it wrong and the "vast majority" of stations continued to work. A spokesman said that only about "a dozen" stations were affected for a matter of minutes and that yesterday saw a record number of trips -- 12,000.

Many cyclists reported problems and pictures of locked docking stations appeared on Twitter after problems getting through to the call centre, run by Serco for TfL. Broken docking stations were reported at Bermondsey, Tower Bridge, Butler's Wharf, Aldgate, St Katharine Docks, Leicester Square, Marylebone Lane, Hinde Street, New Quebec Street and St George's Mews. …
