TOTTENHAM today got the best possible draw when they were paired with Swiss side Young Boys in the Champions League play-off.

Harry Redknapp's team could have faced tougher teams in the shape of Sampdoria, Dynamo Kiev, Auxerre and Braga but the draw in Nyon has boosted their hopes of reaching the lucrative group stages for the first time.

The first leg will be in Bern on 17 August, with the second leg at White Hart Lane on 25 August.

Young Boys were runners-up in the Swiss League last season but have made a poor start to this campaign, drawing two and losing one of their opening three domestic games.

Their sole success has come in Europe, where they knocked out Fenerbahce, drawing the home leg 2-2 before winning 1-0 in Istanbul on Wednesday. Their squad includes an Enfield-born Spurs fan in Scott Sutter, who moved to Switzerland aged 16.

Spurs' only previous European meeting with Swiss opposition ended in a 9-1 aggregate win over Grasshoppers in the 1973-74 UEFA Cup.

Although the omens are good, club secretary Darren Eales is not taking anything for granted.

He said: "It's not an easy draw. For them to beat Fenerbahce 1-0 in Turkey [to get into the play-offs] is a brilliant result. …
