Colts Canter Home in Tight Encounter

RUGBY UNION: Frenchville Pioneers had the opportunity to crush the leading team but fullback Mitch Smith saved O'Dowd Colts from suffering their first loss of the season.

On Saturday night at Rugby Park the top-of-the-table Colts clinched a tight win against second-last-placed Pioneers 29-22 in round 15 of the CQ Rugby Union Championships.

Pioneers coach Ron Howell said although the tight game was pleasing for his team, it was also disappointing to miss the opportunity to claim a win.

"We scored four tries to their two, but their kicker was very good," Howell said.

"He got five penalties and one conversion that got them home.

"It was disappointing because I felt like we had the opportunity to win.

"I think it was the immaturity. We have a very young side and Colts have a reasonably experienced side."

Pioneers' Phil Brown got over the line for the first try from the back of the scrum where he ran to the blind side to score. …
