Thousands of Young Stars Take a Bow

IF the kid next door has been putting in some extra violin practice lately, there is good reason.

The annual Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod has begun, a chance for aspiring music, singing, and speech and drama students to reach for the stars, or at least a trophy.

Committee president Jenny Thomas said between 4000 and 5000 students from 34 schools were expected to compete during the next fortnight.

The eisteddfod started on Sunday with speech and drama sessions which will continue until August 7, when the brass and woodwind competition gets under way.

The event also includes sections for piano, strings, bands and ensembles, and vocal, and speech and drama, which will be held on different days over various venues.

Mrs Thomas said new sections, including primary school orchestras and bands, and mime and improvisation, had been added this year.

"We've put some more sections in this year because teachers had asked for them, and we'll see how we go, and if we have to cut back in other sections next year," she said. …
