A MAN on trial for murdering an elderly Caboolture homeowner was one of only four people who knew there was a secret cash C[pounds sterling]hidey holeC[yen] in the house, a court has been told.

Leo John Coutts, 72, had been living in the Caboolture house for less than three months when he was shot in the head on October 12, 2007, the Supreme Court in Brisbane has heard.

It's alleged his death was the result of a botched home invasion believed to be targeting the former owner of the house.

Russell James Barry, 41, of Morayfield, is currently on trial for Mr Coutts' murder. He has pleaded not guilty.

The former owner, Barry's cousin Terry Barry, gave evidence yesterday that he had paid for the custom-made secret compartment to be built behind a false wall in his son's bedroom in late 2002.

He said he used the compartment to stash money from the drug enterprise he and his cousin used to run. …
