AN Australian woman has recalled the horror of watching passengers on a US jetliner being thrown around the cabin during violent turbulence.

Kaoma Bechaz, a 19-year-old Melbourne university student, boarded the Los Angeles-bound United Airlines Boeing 777 in Washington DC on Tuesday with 254 other passengers and 10 crew.

When the plane flew above Kansas, mayhem broke loose.

The region was in the midst of major thunderstorms and a few slight bumps quickly turned into a severe rollercoaster ride.

"All of a sudden the plane just dropped. I don't know how far, but it felt like forever," Ms Bechaz said.

"We hit a huge one. It was a bit of a blur. People were screaming and yelling.

"People didn't know whether it was because of turbulence or if it could be a mechanical problem.

"Drinks and objects were flying all around the plane so people were covered in tomato juice and coke."

A female passenger sitting next to Ms Bechaz struck the cabin wall so hard a panel cracked. …
