What Have Our Stars Done to Get Such Bad Luck?

IF you were assigned to pen a ditty that encapsulates Sunshine Coast sport right now, Lesley Gore's "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows" would not make the short list.

Having worked at this paper for about four-and-a-half years, it seems every second week we find ourselves writing an article about a local athlete's misfortune.

Sure, all that drama makes for interesting copy for our sports pages, but sometimes you can't help thinking that a higher being is taking great enjoyment out of sticking pins into voodoo dolls bearing the likeness of some of our elite stars. Let's have a look at the evidence.

Sam Reid: Jason Akermanis's dramas at Whitten Oval have been well documented, but Western Bulldogs defender Reid certainly hasn't had a smooth ride either. The Caloundra youngster has played only six games for the Bulldogs thus far and during his short time at the club he has already endured more than his fair share of rotten luck. Over the off-season he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, and in his first senior appearance of 2010, against Hawthorn three weeks ago, his season came crashing to an end after he dislocated both shoulders. In the previous two seasons he played in the Dogs' final-round match, but on both occasions was not selected for the finals the next week.

Josh Drummond: The Maroochydore product has been besieged by injury after injury. Just 72 games in six seasons for the Brisbane Lions says it all.

Ben Ross: The Nambour product came within a whisker of being a quadriplegic when he suffered a neck injury while playing for Cronulla in round one of the NRL last year. That came on top of quite a few suspensions and also being forced off in round one of 2008 when he lost three teeth in a head clash with Manly's Josh Perry. A few years earlier, during his Penrith days, Ross was lucky not to lose a few more molars when he unwisely went toe-to-toe with Gorden "the Raging Bull" Tallis. …
