THEY set out with the goal of conquering the 11km distance that some determined fundraisers will undertake in the Island Charity Swim next month.

But what Currimundi and Nambour Special School students accomplished yesterday was nothing short of impressive a 1563 collective laps of the pool, totalling 28.13km.

The 100 students from Currimundi and 15 from Nambour blitzed the target of 650 laps after just an hour of the swim-a-thon.

Currimundi Special School teacher and swim-a-thon coordinator Peter Nipperess said the students jumped on board to support the 10th annual Island Charity Swim by having their laps sponsored.

The money raised from the event, and two sausage sizzles, will almost meet the $3000 needed for the school's team of teachers to enter the ocean swim on August 14.

The event has raised more than $800,000 for the Currimundi and Nambour special schools, enabling them to purchase educational equipment and build facilities for children whose lives are a constant struggle. …
