CHRIS Hughton admits he will have to rein in Newcastle United's attacking instincts when the Premier League's big guns come to St James' Park, writes MARK DOUGLAS.

United's pragmatic boss has placed a premium on making his side difficult to beat next season, which may mean adopting a 4-5-1 formation for the visit of certain sides to Tyneside. Playing a lone frontman with Kevin Nolan in support was a system that served Newcastle well last season - but it was mainly used on their travels, with a more expansive formation reliant on the pace and delivery of Wayne Routledge and Jonas Gutierrez preferred on home territory.

It worked well in the second half of the season as United racked up an impressive 38 goals in 12 home games after the turn of the year. With the top Premier League sides likely to punish any mistakes much more severely than their Championship promotion rivals, Hughton admits that his side's attacking ambitions may have to be scaled back in favour of making the team tough to break down.

"I think as a team having to be a bit smarter than we were last year in terms of tactics," the United boss told The Journal.

"There are things that we could get away with in the Championship last year that we won't get away with this year.

"Some of the teams we are playing against are just as formidable away from home as they are at home and we have to be aware of that. What we were able to do last season was be very strong defensively. We scored a lot of goals but we were strong at the back. If possible, I want us to be even harder to beat this season. "We know that right through the season we will have to be spot on tactically. That will be the challenge throughout the season, for me as much as anyone. "It will be tougher in this division with the quality we'll be up against but that is the challenge. …
