Medical Centre's Future Uncertain; 4000 Patients May Be Left in Limbo

THE future of a popular Toowoomba medical practice rests on a scalpel's edge with reports yesterday it has gone into receivership.

Staff at Grand Central Medical Centre have not been paid for two weeks and the records of more than 4000 clients have been locked up after the collapse of Brisbane-based The Doctors Company last month.

A doctor from the practice, who declined to be named, told The Chronicle that staff had been left in the dark over the possible closure.

He was concerned by orders not to release clients' medical records or to inform them about the situation.

"We've been told we can't say anything because we'd be breaching the rules," he said.

"But the bottom line is we aren't receiving payments, staff aren't receiving payments and we've got 4000 clients whose medical records aren't available to them because, legally, they belong to The Doctors Company."

The Doctors Company also owns the Pittsworth Medical Centre. …
