University Edges Past Bombers to Secure Win

UNIVERSITY stamped itself a genuine contender for this year's AFL Darling Downs flag with a 10-point win over in-form South Toowoomba at Harristown Park on Saturday.

The Cougars prevailed 14.15 (99) to 13.11 (89) in what was a tight finish to a scrappy game.

The Bombers opened the game like a team coming off seven-straight wins kicking five goals to two in the first quarter.

University then took a stranglehold over the game in the second term as they turned a 17-point deficit into a 15-point advantage at half-time.

Souths kicked the first three goals of the third term to regain the lead before the Cougars rallied to reclaim the lead at three-quarter time.

The Bombers then threatened to snatch a thrilling win but University hung on for its sixth-straight victory.

The Cougars now sit alone in second and take on Toowoomba Tigers this Saturday in a top-of-the-table match.

Mat Croft kicked four goals for University as Garry Wade added three in a strong performance. …
