Gridiron Makes Comeback in City

THE Superbowl is one of the best-known sporting events in world sport, but many may not be aware gridiron is part of the Toowoomba sporting community.

For 15 years from 1989 until 2004, the Toowoomba Chargers were the longest-running team in the Queensland Gridiron League.

Dwindling numbers and interest saw the club fold but the sport is enjoying a renaissance in the city.

The establishment of the Toowoomba Wolves and a return for the Garden City to the QGL last year has pleased gridiron lovers

The challenge remains, however, to boost the sport in the area as many wouldn't know gridiron has a presence in Toowoomba.

"We get that a lot," Wolves committee member and player Grahame Noble said.

"Everywhere we go as a team and whenever we have a team function we wear our team polos and people look at us and say, Cywe didn't know there was a team here'."

The nine-team 2010 QGL season starts on August 28 and the Wolves are keen to add to the depth at the club by attracting new players. …
