Bursary Opens Up Musical Opportunities for Cellist

SUDDENLY once in a lifetime musical opportunities were feasible when Sydney cellist Martin Smith won The Empire Theatres Foundation Brian Boak Outstanding Performer Bursary.

Mr Smith is celebrating being awarded the coveted bursary as he completes performance studies in Germany.

He said the bursary had helped him enormously, enabling him to stay in Berlin for his current studies and travel to Florence, Italy each month to study with renowned tutor and cellist, Professor Natalia Gutman.

Studying a soloist diploma at the Scrola di Musica di Fiesole under Prof Gutman has already rated as a highlight of his musical career.

"This opportunity to study with her is really an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I know I am very lucky," he said.

Mr Smith studied with Susan Blake and Uzi Wiesel at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Upon graduation in 2004, he continued his studies in Leipzig, Germany.

He was chosen as one of just five to study in Florence and said the intimate group, which allowed plenty of one-on-one time with the tutor, had added to the effectiveness of refining his talent. …
