IT has been brought to my attention by my readers that an email is circulating suggesting that on August 27, 2010, Mars will appear as large as a full moon in Earth's sky. The version I saw actually included a power-point presentation, suggesting that Mars and Earth's moon will appear as a adouble moona in late August. It sounds amazing, but is it true?

No it is not. The email is a hoax. It has circulated on and off since 2003. Mars can never appear as large as a full moon as seen from Earth, and Mars will not even be at its brightest in August of 2010.

About every two years, Mars suddenly becomes very noticeable in our sky. That was the case in January and February this year.

Mars was closest to Earth on January 27. Earth passed between the sun and Mars on January 29 in an event called an aoppositiona by astronomers. …
