Greatest Game Bigger Than Refs and Players

THROUGHOUT history, the most successful sporting teams have been blessed with depth in their ranks.

Each and every player knows they are just one bad performance from being relegated, as their on-field deeds attest.

But this is clearly not the case with our rugby league referees.

And no matter what the officials say, the lack of depth, and reduced competition for places this breeds, is bad for the game.

But who'd want to be a referee?

You run your heart out and try your best, only to be abused by all and sundry.

This is where spectators need to pull their heads in and just watch the game. Sure, wear your colours, get upset, be passionate.

But give the man in the middle a fair go, for in Bundy, he has no video support to lean on.

Funnily enough, as a player, I can never remember being angry at a referee for making a mistake.

What did irritate me though, is they would never just put their hand up and say, "Sorry mate, got that one wrong, let's get on with it". …
