State Forest Closed to Allow Salvage of Pine

IF you were planning to take a drive to Cathu State Forest this weekend, you should put your plans into reverse now.

The popular four-wheel driving and camping park is closed to the public because the salvaging of pine damaged by Cyclone Ului is being carried out.

Forestry Plantations Queensland's North Queensland Forest manager, John Ludlow, said yesterday the Cathu State Forest, including the pine plantations, Jaxut camping area and the Clarke Range lookout, was closed for people's safety.

C[pounds sterling]The closure is required to ensure safety of the public during the forest harvesting operation to salvage pine plantations damaged by Cyclone Ului,C[yen] Mr Ludlow said.

There is only one access road and a lot of heavy logging trucks will be using the road while the timber is being hauled out.

C[pounds sterling]Additional signage and a locked gate have been erected on this road and Forestry Plantations Queensland Pty Ltd has been working with police to monitor unauthorised entry,C[yen] Mr Ludlow said. …
