A YEAR ago, James Stannard had no Super 14 contract and his prospects of playing professional rugby in Australia looked forlorn.

Fast forward to the present day and Stannard (pictured) is a man in high demand.

Stannard is in Canberra, training with the Australian seven-a-side squad ahead of October's Commonwealth Games in India, though his involvement has been limited of late.

He has been out of action for his Sydney club side Eastwood for a couple of weeks with bone bruising to his hand.

He expects to be back in action soon, however, and is in no risk of missing out on Australia's bid for a Commonwealth Games gold medal.

Before then, he will return to play for Eastwood, who sit second on the Sydney first grade ladder.

Once his commitments with the Woodies have ended, he will pack his bags for Perth, having been re-signed by the Western Force for next year's Super 15 season, before jumping on the plane to India.

Stannard played for the franchise in 2008 before being cut from their books and picked up by the ACT Brumbies last year.

While the Commonwealth Games sevens squad is yet to be announced, Stannard is confident of being in it, having played a crucial role in Australia's rise to world number three this year. …
