ROTHBURY reacted with anger last night after Raoul Moat's family scattered his ashes in the River Coquet yesterday.

Moat's ashes were sprinkled along the riverbank near where he took his own life in Rothbury after a six-hour stand off with armed police.

An urn bearing the killer's full name Raoul Thomas Moat, details of the crematorium, the cremation date and number, and a picture of the former bouncer was later left at the exact scene of his shooting on Riverside.

People in the village had urged the family not to scatter the ashes there after Tony Laidler, a friend of Moat, claimed they were planning to do so.

"This is not going to be a memorial, there is not going to be any sort of memorial in this village to that man."

Staff at the Newcastle House Hotel in the village last night confirmed that four members of the family had been in for a meal yesterday afternoon.

They claimed Moat's brother and uncle were joined by his mother and another woman.

The killer gave Rothbury unwanted worldwide attention last month by going to ground in the village after shooting his ex-girlfriend Samantha Stobbart in Gateshead, killing her new partner Chris Brown and shooting police officer David Rathband.

He was eventually cornered on Riverside by police, before the saga came to an end. …
