VIETNAM veterans, families and friends felt mixed emotions when they gathered to remember and say thank you to those who fought for the nation.

At Standown Park, Goomboorian on Wednesday, tears clung to cheeks as fallen friends were remembered on Vietnam Veterans Day, or Long Tan Day.

The day began with the march and an opening prayer, then Sue Grigson from Western Australia was invited to wear the Korowai garment (worn by tribal chiefs) as a tribute to all wives, partners and widows of Anzac veteran communities.

The crowd stood for one minute's silence before returned serviceman Noel Huist spoke about the history of Long Tan.

With Long Tan Mud, a song by the Bobkatz, playing in the background, Lyn Morgan laid a wreath on behalf of the Tasmanian branch of women's auxiliary, widows and widowers of Vietnam veterans and families of current conflicts. A salute of remembrance was led by Noel, Sue and others who spoke of coming together to salute men and women who have paid the supreme sacrifice for Australia by serving in conflicts post-Vietnam War. …
