A HANDFUL of bright students at Gosforth High in Newcastle achieved straight A* and A grades.

Katie Jessett of Whitebridge Park, Gosforth, achieved three As in French, German and history and will now go on to study French, German and Arabic at St John's college at Durham University.

The 18-year-old said: "It was a bit of a shock. I couldn't believe it. I know university will be a big change to school but I am really looking forward to it.

"I just really hope my friends have done as well." Tom Harvey, 18, of Brunton Park, achieved three A*s in maths, further maths and physics. He will now go to Warwick University to study maths.

He said: "I am so pleased with the results. When I finished my exams I thought they went OK and I had a feeling I could get some A*s, but I was still shocked when I opened the envelope."

Peter Kurilecz, 19, of Brunswick Village, got two A*s in geography and history and achieved an A in French.

He will now go on to study history at Christ College at Cambridge University. …
