Time to Plant Up Those Veggies; Brian Rimmington Gives a Few Pointers for Growing Top Tomatoes

WITH tomato prices predicted to double in the next couple of months, champion Rockhampton gardener Brian Rimmington is the perfect asaucea of inspiration.

Leading local greengrocer Robbie Dunnett yesterday said the fruit could rise from $3/kg to $6/kg by September/October.

It stems from the poisoning of a farm irrigation system in Bowen in June which killed $23.5 million worth of seedlings.

Since first entering the "Best Kitchen Gardena in the Rockhampton Garden Competition in 1998, Brian has won 10 times in the past 12 years and said preparation and location of the patch and using cow manure and mulch are a good way for backyard gardeners to grow their own crop.

His backyard garden grows more than 20 types of vegetables and many varieties of flowers and his tomato crop produced around six kilograms of fruit over the past couple of days.

After around 70 years of gardening experience, Brian said preparation was aeverythinga when it came to growing good tomatoes. …
