SAILING: Peter Harburg's super fast 20m sloop Black Jack has taken a slender lead in the Audi Hamilton Island Race Week "Gun Boata trophy.

The Queensland pocket maxi has sailed out of the shadow of her New South Wales rival, the Iain Murray-helmed Wild Oats X, to lead the Grand Prix Class line honours aggregate after four races.

Black Jack was again sailed tactically smart by skipper Mark Bradford and crew in yesterday's soft and variable sea breeze, matching boat speed against the larger Peter Millard-skippered Lahana over the Pentecost Island course.

Both crews sailed similar courses tacking on the advantage line of every wind shift that blew over the deck.

However size of waterline length and sail area allowed Lahana to head the fleet closely followed by Wild Oats X and Black Jack when spinnakers were set for the run to the picturesque rounding mark of Pentecost Island.

As expected Lahana increased her lead on the spinnaker run while the two almost identical 20m sloops Wild Oats X and Black Jack became engaged in a private nip-n-tuck dog fight for the minor places. …
