AFTER 27 years in the pharmacy industry, Denise Statham, owner of Brumby's Wyalla, was looking for a new challenge in life.

"I wanted something different," she said.

"And as I am also a window dresser I found the bakery to be just that, as my creativity was needed in-store for the icing, decorating and merchandising of my products."

The move has certainly paid off.

"Brumby's Wyalla was ranked 38th in the state when I purchased the store and after seven months my business jumped to number six, where I earned the title of best improved in the state and was awarded for my hard work with half a tonne of flour."

Ms Statham employs 28 staff ranging from 14 to 44 years old and also has young bakers who have won many trophies at the Toowoomba Show.

"This year my head baker, Dave Kennedy, won best bread of the show,a Ms Statham said proudly.

"It is a great shop for younger staff members to improve their skills for future careers as they deal with customer service, money handling, baking the products and learning the importance of the support we give to the local community and charities a[pounds sterling] our unsold products are donated to church groups and the Salvos. …
