Have You Taken a Chance on Helping Youngsters into Work?

AFTER last Thursday's anxious round of envelope-opening for thousands of A-level students across the North East, yesterday saw a similar spectacle for even more, mostly 16-year-olds, as GCSE results were published.

No doubt soon someone will feature elsewhere on these pages bemoaning the fact that this year more young people gained A-grades than in days gone by.

I'd rather take the opposite view: such results represent ever greater opportunity for our next generation.

The bigger challenge is making that opportunity a concrete one.

Many will of course enrol at college or stay on as sixth formers, but with the economy still very fragile the opportunities for young people to simply get a job are likely to be more limited than in recent years.

That's why many young people will make the sound choice of an apprenticeship, giving them the opportunity to enter the workforce and to continue learning. …
