Tree Felling Begins on Road Upgrade

WILDLIFE rescuer Darren Young scoured the scrub yesterday as chainsaws chewed through nearby trees as work started on controversial upgrades to the "Cathedral Drive" section of the New England Highway.

Sub-contractors began clearing trees and scrub a short distance north of Hampton on Tuesday for road-widening and safety upgrade works which will continue towards Geham.

The first of three sections to be cleared will be from Munro Road, through Hampton, to Collingwood Road. Safe Avenue of Vegetation for Everyone (SAVE) members did not try to disrupt workers but spokesperson Anne-Marie Willis said the group would be watching which trees were cleared.

"The road works have been redesigned as a compromise to leave more vegetation than was first planned," Ms Willis said.

"Generally, we are happy with the compromise in this (Munro Road to Collingwood Road) section.

"We are in dialogue with Main Roads so there shouldn't be any nasty surprises. …
