TWO local firms are going for growth - following a major cash investment at a Hartlepool business and a rescue acquisition for a company in County Durham.

Award-winning exporter AMI Exchangers has invested pounds 300,000 in new machinery and an extension to its factory in Hartlepool.

The move is expected to create six to eight jobs once the expansion programme is complete.

The company, which currently employs 32 staff and makes heat exchangers for marine and industrial applications, is hoping the investment will spark a 30% increase in productivity and a similar rise in sales.

AMI MD John Wiffen said: "When the market improves we will be in a better position than our competitors."

He said AMI had seen a 12-15% drop in business during the recession compared with a market decline of 20-25%.

The company, which exports almost all of its products, was turning over around pounds 5m before the economic downturn hit home.

It won a Queen's Award for Enterprise earlier this year for its work in international markets and was previously named the Teesside's top exporter at the 2008 nebusiness awards. …
